Add memory to an assistant

July 29, 2026

Give an assistant your own material as notes you write like documents, so it answers from them instead of from general knowledge. Notes are added in the editor of an assistant you have already created in Make an assistant.

1

Open the editor

Go to Your assistants, select an assistant, and choose Edit. The sidebar contains a Memory folder holding the assistant's notes.

2

Add a note

Use Add Memory, name the note, and it opens for editing. Notes are formatted documents, so headings, bullet lists, and bold work as they would in any document editor.

a note named Lead times

# Lead times

- Corporate lunch: 48 hours
- Private dinner: one week
- Over 80 people: two weeks

Minimum order is 20 people.
Delivery is within 15 miles, $2/mile after that.

Name notes the way you would name files, such as "Lead times", "Pricing", or "Tone". Each note is a separate document in the sidebar list, and several short notes are easier to scan and edit than one long one.

3

Save the changes

Press Save to make the note live. The editor tracks unsaved changes, and nothing you type reaches the assistant until you save, so a half-written note does not affect anyone using the assistant.

4

Confirm the note is being used

Use Open chat and ask a question whose answer appears only in the note you wrote. Using the example above, ask "can we deliver 30 lunches tomorrow?" A reply that applies the 48-hour lead time and the 20-person minimum confirms the note reached the assistant.

If the answer ignores the note

Check that you pressed Save, and that the note is on the assistant rather than on an agent that did not handle the message.

Choose where a note lives

The Memory folder at the top of the sidebar holds assistant-wide notes. Each agent also has its own Memory section for notes only that agent sees.

Detail relevant to one job

Put the note on the assistant if you are unsure, since it can be moved later. Put it on one agent to keep material out of messages it has nothing to do with.

Edit and delete notes

Select a note in the sidebar to reopen and edit it, then save to make the change live. Deleting a note removes that knowledge from the assistant's answers, and neither editing nor deleting affects apps that were already saved.

Attach files instead of retyping

Use the Files section, available on the assistant and on each agent, to attach documents as reference material. This suits a price list or spec you maintain elsewhere, rather than copying its contents into a note.
